A MAN with mental health problems set fire to his flat, putting other residents at risk, a court heard yesterday.

Bradford Crown Court was told Wayne Gray, 24, wanted to end his own life when he set fire to bedding in his ground floor flat in Burnsall Road, Brighouse.

Prosecutor John Bull said the two flats above Gray’s home were occupied, but nobody was there at the time, at 9pm on July 30 last year.

Gray called the emergency services and told fire officers he had started the fire. He told police he had wanted to kill himself but the heat had become unbearable and he had fled the flat. He was taken to hospital.

His solicitor advocate, Anne-Marie Hutton, said Gray committed the offence to end his life, rather than deliberately hurt anyone.

Gray admitted arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered and was jailed for two years.
