BRADFORD’S City Park is to feature alongside the Olympic Park in a major new London exhibition showcasing urban-landscape projects.

Rethinking The Urban Landscape, which is curated by The Building Centre and the Landscape Institute, aims to exemplify how landscape architecture can offer sustainable solutions to the big challenges facing contemporary urban society.

It features 45 leading contemporary-landscape projects from the UK and abroad, and highlights the importance of investing in green infrastructure if cities are to become more liveable, healthy and safe.

Some of the country’s most powerful contemporary-landscape projects, such as King’s Cross and the Olympic Park, will be shown, alongside small, community-led schemes including pocket parks and community allotments.

The inclusion of Bradford’s City Park has been welcomed by Bradford Council leader David Green.

He said: “We are delighted to hear that this prestigious exhibition being held in London is citing Bradford’s City Park as an example of great landscape design, alongside such other well-known projects as the Olympic Park.

“We are very proud of our multi-award-winning park which was selected for this exhibition because it was designed with water at its heart.

“Local people have taken City Park to their own heart and it is good news to hear that professionals in this area are equally impressed by its 30m fountain — the largest city-centre water feature in the country.

“This exhibition is about reshaping the urban landscape and we believe that City Park has really transformed the Centenary Square area and has been the catalyst for further investment in the city centre.”

Paul Lincoln, of the Landscape Institute, said: “City Park in Bradford is a great example of the way in which well-designed landscapes form new urban spaces that people want to spend time in, and how they can have a beneficial impact on the environment.

"The scheme shows how landscape architecture impacts positively on lives, and this is why we have chosen it to feature in Rethinking The Urban Landscape, our new exhibition. The show comprises 45 projects which demonstrate how landscape architecture can offer sustainable solutions to the big challenges facing contemporary cities, including regeneration and public health.”

The exhibition opens at The Building Centre in Central London on Thursday and runs for six weeks.

It will also be toured around the country this year.
