A MAN had a lucky escape after a fire that spread from a candle engulfed his bedroom in flames.

The 22-year-old fromWestend Drive, Moorbottom, Cleckheaton, was in the shower when his smoke detector went off at just before 8pm yesterday.

Cleckheaton fire watch manager Andy Rose said the man had lit a candle on a table at the back of his bedroom door where he had hung his coat after getting in from work.

"By the time he got back from the shower his bedroom was engulfed in flames. He tried to put it out himself which he shouldn't have done and got a burn to his arm.

"He was a lucky man, if he hadn't heard the smoke detector it would have been a lot worse," he said.

The man was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by firefighters with oxygen therapy until paramedics arrived and he was taken to Dewsbury & District Hospital.
