PEOPLE have been warned to stay safe during a fire fighters strike which begins tomorrow.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has urged the public to be prepared for the 24-hour strike, which starts at 9am.

During the action there will be a reduced number of engines available to respond to emergencies.

The strike is part of ongoing Fire Brigade Union action over pension reforms.

To reduce the likelihood of serious fires during the action, people have been asked to check their smoke alarms, not to overload sockets and not to leave cooking unattended.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton said: "People can do their bit by taking simple steps to reduce the likelihood of nuisance fires, such as bin fires, fires in the open or unnecessary kitchen fires, occurring.

"This can be achieved, for example, by ensuring there is no litter left around your home or business premises which might attract arsonists.

"Also, be very careful whilst cooking and do not leave pans on the hob unattended, even for a moment.

"Your extra vigilance, at home, at work and on the roads during periods of strike means that we can concentrate our resources on protecting life and property, where there is the most need."
