PUPILS at a Bradford primary school have taken a stand against bullying, including homophobic bullying, as part of a week looking at diversity.
Teachers at Wibsey Primary School gave lessons about the harm caused by bullying and pupils in its Diversity Defenders group carried out a presentation on bullying and homophobia at an assembly.
The school is also using a questionnaire to help stimulate discussion about diversity.
The project is part of the PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) curriculum and is being led by Nicole Cooper, PSHCE co-ordinator at the school. She has been partly inspired by Stonewall, the charity which provides training on bullying and homophobic bullying for teachers.
She said: “Bullying and homophobic bullying are not issues in our school but we wanted to raise awareness of them as part of our anti-bullying week. Children might use ‘gay’ as a put-down and not really know what the word means.”
