A SUMMER-long reading challenge has yielded been hailed a success after more than 4,000 young Bradford youngsters bookworms took part.

The Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge, held in Bradford Council’s libraries during the school summer holidays, was a national library scheme aimed at primary-age children to continue to read through their break.

Every child who joined ‘Mythical Maze’ received a fold-out maze, featuring designs by children’s illustrator Sarah McIntyre, to record details of the books they had read.

Children who read six books received a certificate and medal.

This year saw a ten per cent in Bradford children taking part, beating the national two per cent rise. The number of children completing the challenge also increased by 16 per cent. More than 800 children joined the library over the summer to take part especially to take part in the reading challenge. Almost 5,000 children went to 177 free library events that took place in libraries across the district.
