CHARITIES across the district are set to benefit from a Christmas Tree festival which starts in Thornton this weekend.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Mike Gibbons, flicks the switch tonight at St James’ Church in the village at the official opening of the week-long event which will have about 40 trees all lit up and decorated by individual charities and groups.

Each tree will have a bucket for donations and entry is free. It runs until Saturday, December 6, and is open daily from 11am to 7.30pm.

Santa will be there in his grotto and there will be a festive shop and seasonal refreshments.

One of the charities represented there will be Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale.

Its director Linda Howard said: “We are really excited and honoured to be involved in this year’s festival.

“We are so proud of all the people affected by cancer who attend our support groups for all their hard work in creating these decorations.”

Also at the festival will be the Forget Me Not Dementia Fund and Bradford Hospitals Charity.
