PEOPLE waiting for a bus had a miracle escape when a lorry reversed into the shelter where they were stood, smashing windows and ripping metal posts clean out of the pavement.

The dramatic accident happened in Shipley market square at 1.36pm when the large blue articulated lorry appeared to be making a three-point turn after finding itself caught in a bus lane.

The back of the wagon slammed into the back corner of the shelter opposite Jack Fulton’s shop and next to the toilets.

Police said three people needed only minor treatment at the scene having escaped serious injury.

Debbie Hodgson works at Perkins Jewellers and told how she heard calls for help on the traders’ security radio network.

She said: “Suddenly there were cries on the radio saying a lorry had reversed into the shelter so I went out to have a look.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the driver of the lorry had contacted them about the incident which was currently being investigated.
