A RECYCLING firm has issued a plea for people not to include cinder from fires in their household waste, after burning embers caused a blaze in one of its warehouses.

Fire crews from across Bradford and Calderdale were called to a waste transfer station in Swales Moor Road, near Queensbury, shortly after 6pm on Sunday, after staff detected a “small amount of smouldering waste material” during a routine hourly inspection. A spokesman for Envirowaste Services Ltd, which owns the site, said the cinders were found at 5.20pm, at which point the firm’s fire procedures were implemented immediately.

The company’s waste transfer manager, Jenny Firth, confirmed the material had arrived as part of a household waste collection.

“It is imperative that people do not put fire embers in their household waste so situations like this can be avoided,” she said.

“Our fire procedures include an hourly site inspection, which allowed us to successfully control this situation without any injury or damage occurring.

“We feel strongly that all waste facilities should ensure their fire procedures include an hourly inspection as part of their health and safety reporting.” Firefighters from Odsal, Brighouse, Halifax, and Illingworth attended the scene, using two large water jets and breathing apparatus to control the blaze.
