A CITY councillor has reassured residents that Centenary Square remains a safe place to visit despite an allegation of a serious sexual assault.

Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they are looking to speak to in connection with a reported serious sexual assault at the Bradford city centre site.

The alleged incident, which involved a 23-year-old woman, took place in Centenary Square some time between midnight and 5am on Saturday, October 11.

The man is described as having a slim build and believed to be aged in his early 30s.

It is understood he is around 5ft 8ins tall and was wearing dark clothing at the time.

But Cllr Nazam Azam (City, Labour), said Centenary Square was still a safe place for people to visit after this "dreadful" incident and believes existing security measures at the site are sufficient.

He said: "This is dreadful.

"I would hope that the person involved can come forward and I would be confident in the police with their investigations on this. The person involved will hopefully be brought to justice quickly.

"You do not expect this sort of incident to happen in the city centre.

"Someone must have seen something around there at that time.

"I believe it's safe. We get hundreds and hundreds of people passing through Centenary Square daily.

"We do not want this dreadful incident to put anybody off from going there.

"This is an isolated incident, we must remember that. It is not good for the city though.

"I do believe it's a safe place for people to go to. The city centre in Bradford is a safe area.

"There is quite a lot of CCTV cameras around there, which makes it safe for people to go to. But this sort of incident is not good for the city. It's not on.

"Everybody should still be vigilant when they are around the area."

Detective Inspector Tony Nicholson, of Bradford District CID, says they hope to trace the man captured in the CCTV image to aid their investigations.

He said: "This man was seen in the area at the time and we believe he might have vital information which will assist our enquiries.

"Anyone with information about this man's identity is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
