A WOMAN charged with murdering her young daughter after they both fell from an upstairs window at their Bradford home has made her first court appearance.

Gundeep Sanghera, who was critically injured in the incident at Delamere Street, Marshfields, was yesterday pushed into the courtroom in a wheelchair.

She is accused of the murder of 22-month-old Amrita Kaur, who plunged into the garden at the property on February 18 this year.

Sanghera, 37, was accompanied at Bradford Crown Court by three female staff members at a hospital where she is still being treated.

Her wheelchair was placed near the usher's desk where she had a clear view of the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Roger Thomas QC.

Sanghera, who wore a light blue and white patterned blouse, smart black trousers and gold stud earrings, had her long, wavy hair tied in a ponytail.

She spoke softly to confirm her name during the short hearing, that was scheduled to take place that morning at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court.

Instead, it was listed at the crown court at 9.45am.

Judge Thomas said the case would have inevitably been sent by the magistrates to the crown court in a couple of days.

Michelle Colborn QC, the barrister representing Sanghera, said: "She is very distressed by the entire situation."

Miss Colborn said the defendant would need breaks during her trial because she could not sit or stand for long periods.

A High Court Judge will try the case at Bradford Crown Court on June 15 next year.

Sanghera will next be brought before the court for a case management hearing on February 23, when she will enter a plea to the charge.

Both the Crown and defence teams are seeking medical reports on Sanghera, who is being treated by doctors at a hospital in the Warrington area.

Judge Thomas made it a bail condition that she remains resident at the hospital.

He told her: "Your case now is at the crown court, so it moves on."

In February, Sanghera's neighbours told the Telegraph & Argus they believed mother and daughter had moved to Bradford from the south of England about two months before the incident .

A window cleaner discovered mother and toddler lying on the ground at the back of the terraced house at 9.15am on February 18.
