A MAN jumped to his death from the window of a Bradford charity hostel after leaving a suicide note based on dark lyrics from a Red Hot Chili Peppers single, a city inquest heard.

Craig Smith, 44, of Apsley Villas in Manningham, was discovered by fellow residents in the Cyrenians-run hostel who heard a thud and called paramedics. Mr Smith, who had struggled with alcohol problems, died from multiple injuries at Bradford Royal Infirmary on August 26 this year.

A statement from his sister Louise Cherry, which was read out in court, said her brother, who had travelled all over the world and ended up being deported from many countries, had been brought up in an off-licence and a pub with a troubled childhood and a life-long struggle with alcohol. She added: “He was a tortured soul and this outcome to his life was inevitable.”

Mr Smith’s brother Patrick Smith told Assistant Bradford Coroner Dr Dominic Bell the wording of the note found in his brother’s flat was similar to lyrics from a Red Hot Chilli Pepper song. They had ended “I don’t want to feel that way so take me to a place far away”.
