TRANSPORT Minister Baroness Susan Kramer has backed calls for better access to Leeds Bradford airport ahead of a decision by the Government.

Traffic at the airport is expected to rise sharply, with more than five million passengers expected to use the airport in 2016, rising to more than eight million by 2030. But more than 93 per cent of passengers arrive at the airport in private vehicles and there have been calls for a rail link.

A Department of Transport report on the issue has been completed and a decision expected soon.

Greg Mulholland MP has been among those calling for a rail connection and Baroness Kramer said a modern public transport system was needed.

He said: “As the MP for the airport, I have long called for a rail link that will improve connectivity to Leeds-Bradford Airport and I welcome the transport minister’s comments that she is looking at this matter seriously.”
