A BRADFORD driver caught doing 107mph in a 50mph zone was stopped by police driving again only six minutes after he had been banned from the roads by magistrates.

Aftab Khan had just been found guilty of travelling at more than twice the speed limit on Bingley bypass last February, when he was snared again by the same roads policing officers who had given evidence against him in court.

The 33-year-old's reaction in court to being told his driving ban started immediately aroused the officers' suspicions, said a police spokesman.

They sensed that he had driven to court, and so waited for him to return to his vehicle and then stopped him as he tried to drive off.

It had been only six minutes since he left the court.

His car, a powerful Volkswagen Golf R32, was seized on the spot by the officers.

The police spokesman said Khan would have been taken straight back into court if it was not so late in the day.

Instead, he was left to find his own way home after being reported for driving while disqualified.

He will receive a court summons in the near future with the likelihood that his ban will be increased by magistrates, said police.

PC Paul Crabtree, of the Western Area Roads Policing Unit, said: "His reaction to being banned indicated that he had arrived in his car, and sure enough he returned to his vehicle and attempted to leave in it."

Khan, of Kingswood Street, Great Horton, had stood trial at Calderdale Magistrates' Court in Halifax, charged with speeding on the bypass. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge at an earlier hearing in August.

But magistrates found him guilty and disqualified him from driving for 28 days. He was also fined £375 and ordered to pay costs of £620 and a surcharge of £38 - a total of £1,033.

The police spokesman added: "He was told by magistrates that his ban would begin immediately. He said 'does that mean I am banned from driving now?'. His reaction alerted the officers."

The spokesman added: "He will have to go back to court and will probably get his ban extended."
