CHILDREN and adults who apply for assisted travel from Bradford Council could have these applications considered under new guidance.

The Council says its current arrangements for providing free travel are "financially unsustainable" and it needs to save £700,000 from its travel budgets in 2015/16.

Now it wants to set out a framework which it says will help to ensure any cost-cutting decisions are made in as fair a way as possible.

The authority provides travel support to adults eligible for social care, to help them get to and from care services, and for eligible children, to get to and from school or college.

Councillor Ralph Berry, portfolio holder for children's services, said: "It is well known the Council is facing unprecedented funding cuts and doing nothing is not an option.

"But we remain as committed as ever to supporting our vulnerable young people by channelling resources as efficiently as possible."

Councillor Amir Hussain, portfolio holder for Adult Services and Health, said: "Our key priority remains protecting services for the most vulnerable people in our community, while doing all we can to support a transition towards dignified independent travel for adults who are able to do so."

The plan will go before the Council's Executive on Thursday, and if approved, will go out to a 12-week consultation starting in November.

This consultation will focus on how children are affected, as a consultation has already been carried out about effects to adults.
