A BURGLARY suspect was grabbed in a garden by a police dog after a late-night car chase in Bradford.

Police deployed a dog unit, squad cars and the force helicopter when a red Toyota Prius was stolen from a house on Huddersfield Road, Wyke, at about 1.20am today.

The car was then spotted on nearby Mayfield Avenue by roads policing officers, but failed to stop. After a short chase the vehicle was abandoned on Towngate and the suspect ran off.

A police dog caught a man in a nearby garden and he was arrested by officers.

Sergeant Penny Robinson, of the Western Area Roads Policing Unit, said: "Police were called to a report of a burglary in Huddersfield Road, Wyke at 1.22am today in which a red Toyota Prius was stolen.

"Roads policing officers later sighted the vehicle in Mayfield Avenue, but it failed to stop. Police followed the vehicle at a safe distance before it was abandoned in Towngate.

"A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in custody today.

"The vehicle has been recovered and enquiries are ongoing."
