A DANGEROUS driver who hit speeds of 100mph during a early hours police pursuit has been jailed for six months.

Bradford Crown Court heard how the police helicopter was scrambled to help track Mohsim Riaz's Volkswagen Polo during the high-speed pursuit in August.

Riaz, 29, was stopped in the Barkerend Road area of the city at about 2.40am, but drove off when asked about identification documents as there was a problem with his log book.

Riaz, of Lapage Street, Bradford Moor, who had no previous driving convictions, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop and failing to provide a breath sample.

His lawyer Stephen Couch urged Judge Robert Bartfield to consider imposing a suspended prison sentence and said his client would lose his job if jailed.

Judge Bartfield said it had been a very serious piece of driving and a speed of 100mph had been maintained for a significant part of the pursuit.

"Everybody has got to understand if they drive like this they will go to prison," said Judge Bartfield.

Riaz was jailed for six months and banned from driving for 18 months. He will have to pass an extended driving test.
