YELLOW school buses which are a familiar sight on Bradford's streets have gone green.

The 119-strong West Yorkshire fleet of My Bus vehicles has been fitted with 'clean technology' to reduce emissions.

The upgrade – made possible following a successful £1 million funding bid to the Department for Transport – also includes the installation of a new performance management system, which helps the driver improve fuel efficiency.

Councillor Peter Box, chairman of West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said: "Young people are especially susceptible to the potential adverse health effects of vehicle emissions, so fitting this technology to school buses is particularly beneficial.

"As these vehicles operate in the vicinity of the school gate, there will also be health benefits for children who walk or cycle to school as well as for waiting parents and those youngsters boarding and alighting buses."

To complete the initiative, the authority match-funded the Department for Transport with an £800,000 contribution.
