IT'S now even easier to donate to a fund to create a lasting memorial to Bradford's fallen soldiers of World War One.

People from across the district are being asked to come together to help fund a new memorial in France to the Bradford Pals killed at the Battle of the Somme.

The Telegraph & Argus has joined forces with Bradford Council to set up the Honour the Pals appeal, with the support of the Bradford World War One Group.

And now people can make donations online as well as by post, thanks to an online donation facility set up by Bradford Council.

Councillor David Green, leader of Bradford Council, said: "I welcome the new way for people to donate. It's only a couple of clicks that people need to make to recognise the sacrifice of those Bradfordians, 100 years ago, who gave their life for the country."

Dozens of kind-hearted people have so far helped kickstart the appeal.

So far more than £700 has been donated, with many donors also sending in moving tributes to their relatives who fought and died in the dreadful conflict.

An estimated 1,394 Pals ‘went over the top’ on July 1,1916 and 1,017 of them were either killed or injured in that one dreadful day.

The new memorial would hopefully be unveiled on the centenary of the battle, and would also recognise the sacrifice made by local men from other battalions and regiments who fought and died in the First World War.
