BRADFORD has some of the cheapest hotel rooms in the UK, a new survey has revealed.

The average cost of a room in the city in the first six months of this year was just £49 per night, less than half the national average of £105, and down two per cent from £50 for the same period in 2013.

The Hotel Price Index report, from Hotels.com, states Bradford provides the "best value for money" out of 46 major UK towns and cities. Coventry is its closest rival with an average room cost of £55.

Bradford's figure compares favourably with other Yorkshire destinations - a room in Scarborough costs, on average, £60 a night. It is £65 a night in Sheffield, £76 in Leeds and £94 in York.

Gary Peacock, manager of the Midland Hotel on Forster Square, said Bradford was perceived by customers as offering good value for money.

"There is a difference between cheap and getting value for the price you pay," he said.

"Because of our close proximity to Leeds, there are an enormous amount of rooms available, with new businesses in the city such as Premier Inn and Travelodge also providing lower rates.

"As demand lowers, so do the rates, but Bradford is seen by customers as offering good value for money, with a better quality of room for less price.

"In time, the rates will rise as the economy of the city picks up."

Kate Hopcraft, of Hotels.com, said: "Not only does Bradford have a rich heritage and numerous museums, it has the most affordable hotel rates in the UK.

"Hopefully this will encourage more Brits to discover all this city has to offer."
