An expert today said there appeared to be little acknowledgement of the achievements of motorcycling's historical giants as actor Steve McQueen topped the list in a poll to find the most iconic bikers of all time.
Barry Robinson, 75, motor sports correspondent for the Telegraph & Argus and a former motorcyclist, said sporting legends like Geoffrey Duke and Mike Hailwood should have topped the list.
Instead McQueen, who famously did his own stunt-riding in movie classic the Great Escape, was voted top of the pile in the survey published by a motorcycle newspaper.
Mr Robinson said he believed sports stars like Geoffrey Duke and Mike Hailwood should be regarded as more iconic.
"They are top of the list. Between them they won about 30 world championships," he said.
While Hailwood made number six on the list, with six per cent of the votes, Duke was not even in the top ten.
