A FUNDRAISING scheme dreamt up in Bradford has seen more than 5,000 cakes sold for charity across the UK.
Muslim volunteers fasting for Ramadan are delivering the chocolate fudge cakes to raise money for Islamic Relief’s Cakes4Syria fundraising effort.
The campaign raised £26,455 in its first week alone, and famous personalities who have bought the sweet treats include newsreader Jon Snow and political journalist Mehdi Hasan.
Cakes4Syria was started last Ramadan by 23-year-old Islamic Relief volunteer Sibbat e Noor, a trainee solicitor from Bradford.
He said: “It’s just brilliant, I can’t believe it’s gone national. The response we’ve had this year has been almost overwhelming.
"The atmosphere in the team here in Bradford is excellent, we are really pulling together to do something for the people of Syria."
The cakes, which cist £10, can be ordered by phone on 01274 952144 or by texting 07511 724 372, from noon to 8pm daily. For each cake sold, £5 is donated to Islamic Relief’s Syria appeal.
