A 90-year-old man who had his pension money snatched from his grasp seconds after collecting it from the post office today thanked generous people who have offered to replace it.

George Holt, who lives with his wife Georgina, 87, in East Bowling, Bradford, has had a number of offers of help since his plight was highlighted in the Telegraph & Argus.

The latest was an anonymous letter with the message: "Sorry about your robbery, hope this will do you a bit of good," and £50 in cash in the envelope.

Mr Holt said: "It is really generous of people but I don't want anyone to replace our money. It hasn't done us much harm and we have got over it.

"We can't return this money because we don't know where to return it to. But I want whoever it was to know it was very much appreciated. It makes us feel humble."

Mr Holt had just collected the £200 weekly pension for himself and his wife at the New Hey Road Post Office in East Bowling on December 29 when his wallet was snatched from his hand and the thief ran off with it.

Police are still hunting the thief, who was a white man in his late teens, 5ft 10ins tall, and of thin build. He had thin features with prominent cheekbones, short light brown hair and was clean shaven.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact PC Paul McGee of Bradford South Police on (01274) 376459.
