Rosie Perrow has two reasons to celebrate.
The great-grandmother turns 92 on May 22... and for the first time has clinched a competition win!
“I’ve never won anything before – not even a raffle!” says Rosie, of Idle.
Smartly-styled Rosie is a regular shopper at Bradford’s Bonmarché store on Broadway, and it was there that daughter Jane, another regular shopper at the store, picked up a leaflet for the store’s Mother’s Day competition.
As with many mums and daughters, the pair share a close bond. Jane, who previously worked in the catering and caring industry, is now a full-time carer to her mum who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.
The pair have also had their share of heartache over the years. Jane’s first husband died of a heart attack in his 40s and Jane also suffered a heart attack in her 30s.
Retired civil servant Rosie, who has another daughter, Susan, went on to have twins but only Jane survived. Mother-of-two Jane also had serious medical problems and ended up having a hysterectomy in her late 30s.
Rosie and Jane say that while they have always been close, their experiences have brought them even closer. “All the hard times we have shared and we’ve always been so close, right from me being little,” says Jane.
The 55-year-old recalls her mum, a keen handicrafter, would knit and bake regularly for all the family. Now Jane is passing on those skills to the younger generation. “That is how I learned to cook and now I am doing it with my grandchildren,” says Jane.
As she approaches her 92nd birthday I ask Rosie her secret to longevity. “Keep smiling and tackle everything when it comes,” she smiles.
Now in its second year, the Bonmarché Mother’s Day competition attracted many entries. As well as winning a smart new outfit from the store’s David Emanuel spring collection, Jane and her mum were automatically entered into the national draw for a chance to dine with the fashion designer, who was famed for his part in the creation of Princess Diana’s wedding gown.
Store manager Kim Lockwood and assistant manager Michelle Hodgkin say Rosie and Jane are well-deserved winners.
Speaking about the competition, Kim says: “It’s nice to give something back to customers.”
As our pictures taken at Bradford’s Mirror Pool show, mum and daughter share the same sense of style, opting for beautifully-coloured maxi dresses from the David Emanuel collection.
Rosie wears a brown mix dress with beaded detail on the waistband, priced at £32. Her Bonmarché sequinned shrug, priced at £18, adds a touch of glamour.
Jane’s colourful purple mix maxi is priced at £29.50. Jane completes her outfit with a purple Bonmarché shrug priced at £16.50.
