M62 car transporter brakes catch fire

First published in News

The brakes on a fully-loaded car transporter got so hot they caught fire. A crew from Brighouse fire station were called out to Armytage Road, Brighouse, at 8pm on Wednesday. But the driver had put out the blaze himself using a dry powder extinguisher. Watch Commander Jimmy Johnstone said: “He had come down the M62, which is quite a hill, and his brakes had probably been heating up on the way down.”

Brakes do not overheat by themselves. It's either misuse by bad driving, or a maintenance issue. Is this being investigated? It should be public safety is at stake. VOSA? WYP?

Brakes are made from iron.

Can anyone tell us how that element can magically catch fire?

Air brakes operate like at bother brakes. Heat causes friction, friction causes heat, heat can set fire to grease which is petroleum based and this can happen in a recently serviced Vehicle or one with a fault. Not always a driver "error" this can occur if a calliper sticks or if new pads have been installed and not bedded in. Hope this explains somewhat.
