A £15 million school, called Grace Academy, will be the next major school building project in Bradford and is on track to open in September 2015.

The school, to be built on fields off Fenby Avenue in East Bowling, is the biggest education building project for Bradford Council, and is being constructed using part of a £16.6m Government grant.

Although the Council will build the school, it will be run by the Diocese of Bradford, which is in the process of creating a board of governors. They will be visiting local schools in the next term to talk to potential future pupils.

Builders could be on site by the end of the month, and will have the capacity for 1,050 pupils and almost 100 staff.

A report going to the Council’s Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday updates councillors on current school building projects, which also include an expansion of Cullingworth Village Primary School and the second phase of the expansion of Princeville Primary School.

The Council’s education building team is also in the process of expanding a number of schools to provide free places for two-year-olds in deprived communities.

The Diocese of Bradford have said Grace Academy’s facilities, including a sports hall, will be available for community use outside of school hours.

Dr David Lee, chairman of the Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust, said: “There is the planning permission for the site in place and we now have all the specs for the design of classrooms.

“It is going to be called Grace Academy to reflect the concern for other people held by the Diocese. We are working on setting up a board of governors and working out our admissions policy.

“We will soon be contacting the community and going out to primary schools before the summer holidays.

“There is a huge amount going on behind the scenes to make sure we get everything right.”

The committee meets on Tuesday at 5.30pm in City Hall.
