A Bradford MP has called on the Government and retailers to introduce systems to allow people to continue to use cheques to pay for goods and services.

David Ward (Lib Dem, Bradford East) has tabled an Early Day Motion and written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer calling for greater protections for people wanting to use cheques for payment.

Cheques are a crucial part of the British payments system with nearly £840 billion worth processed last year – accounting for ten per cent of all payments made by individuals, he said.

Late last year the Government announced proposals for speeding up the deposit of cheques using picture messaging on smartphones.

Mr Ward said: “I campaigned hard to save the cheque, now it’s time to secure the use of the cheque.”
