Schools and community groups across the district are on their marks and getting set for this weekend’s Sport Relief.

From Friday to Sunday people will be running, cycling and swimming to raise money for the biennial charity event, with many local schools taking part in the Sport Relief Mile in addition to a major event in a Bradford Park.

The big event in Bradford will be the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in Lister Park. Runners of all ages are invited to take part in the event, from 10am to 4pm.

Participants can choose to run one, three or six miles around the park, and to warm up there will be a mass Zumba before the starter’s pistol. During the day there will be activities including henna, bouncy castles, face- painting, food and refreshments. The event will be attended by Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Khadim Hussain.

Rebecca Pickles and Michaela Baker, of Bradford Youth Development Partnership, said: “We are delighted that so many people have already signed up but we want even more people in Bradford to take part and make it the best Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile yet. So let’s show the rest of the country what we can do and raise as much money as we possibly can for this incredible cause.”

The Marriott, Hollins Hall, Baildon and Spenborough Pool and Fitness Complex will be hosting swimming events over the three days of Sports Relief where swimmers, either individuals or teams, can chose to tackle either 60, 100 or 200 lengths.

Sport Relief raises money for vulnerable people in the UK and abroad.

One Bradford school was quick off the blocks, running their mile yesterday. Forty-five Belle Vue Girls’ School pupils visited Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground and did their mile by running five laps of the pitch.

Pupils who did not visit the ground will do their run during PE lessons, and the school hopes to top the £972 it raised in 2012.

Other schools holding events include Springwood Primary School in Manningham, where as well as sporty activities, teachers will dress up as sporting personalities. Harden Primary School’s day will have a Tour de France theme and Horton Grange Primary School will hold a Sports Relief fair.

Since its inception in 2002, Sport Relief has raised more than £195 million.
