Tesco is looking at establishing a store in Haworth

First published in News

Supermarket giant Tesco has confirmed it is looking into establishing a store in Haworth.

The retail giant, which this month unveiled plans to build a store in Silsden and create 200 jobs, has revealed its intentions for the Worth Valley, though did not specify a site.

Tesco spokesman Mark Thomas said: “We would love to bring a new convenience store to Haworth to serve the local community and we’re reviewing our options in the village.

“Should any application be submitted, residents would be consulted.”

Andrew Snowden, who owns JR Snowden general store in Mill Hey, warned if a Tesco comes to the village it would mean the end of his long-established shop.

And Tina Dowse, who works in Ibbotsons butchers and greengrocers, in Sun Street, said: “It would be a concern for any business here.”

We have the most expensive food in Europe. Supermarket 'convenience' stores will soon outnumber the big sheds. Why? Because Tesco and the like have found they can charge more for food bought at a convenience stores.

Big business is ripping us off as usual. No wonder they are so keen to expand their convenience store empires.

Will mean a free ATM so that is good for the village when PO goes.

Rumour is the new Tesco's will be opposite the station on the Royal Oak site. Mr Snowden should be worried, if the staff at Tesco's are polite and welcoming I'm sure locals will prefer to shop there. I'm all for supporting our local shops but not when the proprietor is rude and abrupt. It will also be nice not to have to avoid the delivery van which seems to always be on the double yellows outside the shop, it's a hazard to local drivers trying to pass.
