Baildon student Jenny set to scale Kilimanjaro

Baildon student Jenny Woodward will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of a meningitis charity next year.

And the 19-year-old former Bradford young ambassador is busy raising funds, with a day in aid of the good cause at the Malt Shovel pub in her home town this Saturday.

Former Salts Grammar pupil Jenny was chosen to represent Bradford as an ambassador for the city at a national event in Liverpool when it was the City of Culture in 2009.

“Several of us went representing Bradford and the theme was its history as a centre for the milling industry,” said Jenny, who is now studying fine art at Loughborough University.

She will be off to Kenya on a six-day hike to the top of the famous snow-capped mountain to raise cash for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

“It will be the most challenging thing I’ve ever done, but it’s in aid of such a good cause,” said Jenny, who already has a Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

“Meningitis is something which hits teenagers and young people and I know some who’ve suffered with it.”

She is aiming to raise a total of about £2,800 and the event at the Malt Shovel, where she works part-time, should really swell her appeal.

“There will be stalls and a tombola – it all starts at 11am and goes on until the evening when there will be a big raffle,” Jenny said.

She sets off on her climb in September next year and will be doing plenty of training with other students from Loughborough who are also going on the trip.

And in her spare time at home she is always involved in doing important community work.

“I’m a leader with the 3rd Baildon Guides and look after the Rainbows.

“It’s the same group I joined and have stayed with it all the way through,” Jenny said.

But she may be a little too far away to commute after she finishes her university degree.

“I’d like to go to study art in Australia after a year of travelling first,” she said.
