A four-wheeled Hollywood superstar will be at the switch-on of Bingley Christmas lights when the famous DeLorean car from Back to the Future rolls into town on Saturday.

The time-travelling classic will ferry TV gardener Katie Rushworth to the town centre to turn on the decorations at 4.20pm – hopefully not diverting electricity to the car itself and sending the star of ITV’s Love Your Garden to a different dimension.

Bingley Chamber of Trade member Jamie Illingworth said the DeLorean itself “lights up like a Christmas tree”.

“It’s an exact replica of the car in the film, complete with a hoverboard in the boot. Hopefully we’ll have good weather as a lot of work has gone into things – donations from businesses mean Santa’s Grotto will have 700 free presents to give out to local children.”

“As to the insurance group of the DeLorean – I haven’t a clue!” said Mr Illingworth, of Bingley insurance brokers Illingworth McNair.

More conventional Christmas travel will also be available with free donkey rides for children, plus the “land-train”.

And the upwardly mobile will be delighted by a climbing wall and trampolines.

Howard Martin, chairman of the town’s trade chamber said everything was set for a great family Saturday; “Santa and his elves will be in place from 10.30am to 4.30pm and we’ve all put extra effort into making everything bigger and better in Bingley this year,” he Martin.

“It’s a great free event and we really want to involve all of the town.

“There is super indoor fair in the Arts Centre and the outdoor Christmas market has really been improved this year with many more stalls.

“We just hope everybody will come along and support all the hard work which has gone into what will be a very special day.” Mr Martin said.
