It’s a site more used to hosting waltzers, candy floss stalls and hook-a-duck games.

But now Wibsey’s fairground could also become a car park, in a move designed to ease the village’s parking woes.

Businesses on High Street say they have been losing out on trade because customers are finding it difficult to park up in the area.

Now a Council committee will consider whether to provide a car park on the nearby fairground, off Fair Road, which would be used on the 48 weeks of the year that the site lies empty.

The campaign has been led by Wibsey Urban Village Partnership, which has collected a 1,500-strong petition in favour of the move. One of those spearheading the campaign is travel agent Stephen Howard, of Stephen Howard Travel.

He said over the years more parking restrictions had been placed around Wibsey village centre, which made it difficult for customers to visit local shops. He said: “If they can’t park up, they are going elsewhere.”

Mr Howard said the group had been in touch with the fair, which visits for two weeks in May and two weeks in September, and they had backed the idea.

He said: “They would be delighted, because often when they come, particularly in September, the ground can be quite boggy and marshy, so with a bit more of a semi-permanent or permanent base it would be better for them.”

The car park would be created by installing a webbing material which would allow grass to grow through the holes to maintain its green appearance. It is likely it would be a pay-and-display arrangement, but the number of parking spaces has yet to be decided.

An 80-space car park would cost the Council around £67,000, a report going before the Bradford South Area Committee reveals.

Councillor Lynne Smith (Lab, Wibsey) said she and ward colleagues Councillors Ralph Berry and David Green supported the idea.

She said: “We can’t please absolutely everybody, but I think if this scheme goes ahead it will enhance Wibsey High Street and will actually be popular with the vast majority of people.”

Bradford South Area Committee will meet on Thursday at City Hall at 5pm, where it will decide whether the idea should be pursued.
