An MP is backing a community bid to save a landmark cafe.

Gladman Care Homes Ltd had its most recent plan to redevelop the former All Saints Middle School site, off Bridge Street, Otley, rejected in June. But the developer, whose 48-flat home for the over 60s would involve demolishing the nearby Wharfe View Cafe – better known as Dunnies – is now appealing.

Now some residents are asking Leeds City Council to have the cafe listed as an ‘asset of community value’, which could safeguard it for future generations.

MP Greg Mulholland is urging the authority to support the bid. He said: “Dunnies attracts a large number of cyclists and motorcyclists and has been an important landmark since 1925. It must be preserved as a cafe as it is an Otley institution. The council has the power to grant this status to sites which are valuable to the community. Dunnies is an excellent example.”
