A lorry delivering stone overturned after hitting a railway bridge in Keighley.

Yesterday morning’s accident blocked both sides of Park Lane, next to the Globe Pub at the road’s junction with Parkwood Street.

The incident happened at 7.10am as the Volvo articulated lorry tried to pass under the bridge, which carries the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway’s steam and diesel engines.

The lorry driver was about 400 yards from his destination, when the top of the container on the back of the lorry hit the 13ft 6ins high bridge causing the vehicle to slowly tip on to its side.

The driver, 48, of Lancashire, managed to scramble from the cab and was uninjured. The road remained blocked more than three hours after the accident, with two recovery vehicle teams working to remove the lorry which was resting against one side of the Globe Pub.

Little damage was visible to the bridge, though the sign indicating its height had been partly dislodged.

Police Community Support Officers re-directed traffic down Parkwood Street, Longcroft and Coney Lane. Pedestrians also had to take a short detour.

The road was not fully cleared until the afternoon.

Steven Mahomet, licensee of the Globe, said: “The lorry was right up against our wall so we weren’t able to see the damage outside till they shifted it. We’ve checked inside the building and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong.

“I assume the lorry must have a full load because they had a big job moving it.

“I was upstairs above the pub when it happened but I never heard a thing. The first I knew of it was when I went into the kitchen to make a brew, saw a police car parked outside and thought ‘what’s that doing here?’ “There’s been a few wagons which have hit the bridge over the years, but none of them have turned over before.”

A spokesman for the K&WVR said the bridge had been checked by maintenance staff yesterday and declared safe.

She said the railway would be operating as normal this weekend.
