Elected police chiefs are poised to take control of fire services – despite the Home Secretary admitting their record was “messy and uneven”.

The Government will “consider seriously” a proposal to expand the empires of police and crime commissioners (PCCs) by axing fire authorities, a minister said.

Damian Green, the justice minister, said the move would provide the necessary “leadership” in the fire service and make it properly accountable to the public.

The shake-up would see Mark Burns-Williamson (pictured), West Yorkshire’s PCC, take over from the West Yorkshire fire authority, which includes councillors from Bradford.
