Hundreds of mourners filled a Bradford church today, with many having to stand outside in the rain to say a double farewell to a proud mother and her soldier son.

Lance Corporal Daniel Hague, 32, had been home on compassionate leave to see his desperately-ill mother Sally Hague when he died in a crash on September 16 in which two others were also killed.

His coffin, bearing his cap, belt and operational medals, was carried in first by pallbearers from his regiment, followed by his mother's coffin at St James Parish Church, Thornton.

LCpl Hague's death had initially been kept from his mother by family who feared her health would worsen but it is understood the news had been broken to her before she died, aged 50, on November 6 at her home in Thornton.

The father-of-one had been due to return to his Lancashire-based unit the day before the high-performance Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in which he was a passenger in went out-of-control and ploughed into a hairdressing salon in Thornton but had managed to extend his compassionate leave.

LCpl Hague, who leaves a son Dylan, was a former pupil of Yorkshire Martyrs School in Bradford and started his Army career in the Royal Logistics Corps before joining the Force Support Squadron, 2 Medical Regiment.

The service was followed by private cremation.
