Eminent professor and political commentator James O’Connell has died at the age of 87.
Prof O’Connell was Professor of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford from 1978 to 1993 during which time he built up a respected academic department.
He died in his sleep on September 8. He had been diagnosed with bowel cancer three weeks earlier.
Professor O’Connell, from Cork, Ireland, and his wife Rosemary lived in Ben Rhydding, Ilkley. He and his wife moved to London last year to be nearer to their family.
Professor O’Connell is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 1.30pm on Monday, at City of London Cemetery, London.
