The West Yorkshire Savoyards bring one of the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas to the stage this weekend.

The Pirates Of Penzance, described as “fast, funny and packed with satirical wit and musical excellence”, will set sail at Guiseley Theatre tomorrow at 7.30pm.

The ‘Savs’, who specialise in rousing productions of G&S operas, have Ilkley-born TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh as their president. “The works of Gilbert and Sullivan continue to inspire and amuse generation after generation of music-lovers and theatre-goers, and the West Yorkshire Savoyards continue to enthral their audiences,” he says. Alistair Donkin, who is directing the production, describes it as “a dramatically-staged masterpiece of music and comic timing.

“Gilbert and Sullivan's blockbuster is among the most crowd-pleasing comic musicals in history; loved for its dynamite songs, gleefully entertaining story and saucy satire,” he adds. “Filled with Sullivan’s memorable melodies, The Pirates Of Penzance is pure joy.”

The cast is led by Paul Richmond as Frederic, the Pirate Apprentice. John Colston plays the Pirate King and his Lieutenant, Samuel, is played by Graham Weston.
