Bingley Little Theatre presents poignant comedy The Cemetery Club next week.
Set in Queens, New York, it’s about three Jewish widows who meet monthly for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves.
Ida (Jan Darnborough) is sweet-tempered and ready to begin a new life, Lucille (Deborah Mouat) is the girl who just wants to have fun, and Doris (Kay Vann) is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam (Garth Rookes) enters the scene while visiting his wife’s grave.
Doris and Lucille set out to crush the budding romance between Sam and Ida, but are soon guilt-stricken when this breaks her heart.
“The Cemetery Club has one-liners that will have you in stitches, but is also a poignant reminder that life is far too short to be anything but happy,” says director Anthony Leach. “This touching play about three feuding Jewish women is funny, wise and gloriously witty – think Steel Magnolias meets The Golden Girls.”
Anthony has been associated with BLT for more than 50 years. He has appeared in productions including Natural Causes, Kiss Of Death and Five Blue Haired Ladies, and designed sets for Night Of The Iguana, Catherine Howard, Mind Game, and Dad’s Army.
The Cemetery Club runs from Monday to Saturday at Bingley Arts Centre. For tickets ring (01274) 567983.
