Keen knitters in Bradford are volunteering their time and skills to provide items for families affected by premature births.

Tina Burton, 44, is the founder of Angel Knitters, a charity that provides clothing to hospital neonatal and special baby care units.

Starting out with only two volunteers in April last year, more than 20 knitters have now contributed items to the Holme Wood-based charity.

“It’s a very personal charity, as the issue has affected me and my family,” said Mrs Burton. “I’ve been knitting since I was a little girl and now I can use it to help people.”

Mrs Burton started working with just two hospitals, including Bradford Royal Infirmary, but her dedicated team of volunteers now send clothing like hats and blankets to at least ten across the country, as well directly to families.

“We do it for love, and it’s our chance to give something back to the community,” she said.

The group are self-funded and always on the lookout for donations and new volunteers. They are holding a ‘Ladies Night’ fundraising event at East Bowling Unity Club on Saturday, November 9.
