Action must be taken about an unauthorised stonemason’s yard causing problems on a nearby railway line, councillors have said.

Trains have been having problems braking because of dust coming from Dimensional Stone Sales in West Bowling, Bradford.

Network Rail has also complained about large dust clouds obscuring the signals approaching Bradford Interchange, according to a report by Bradford Council.

The firm has also not complied with one of the conditions of its planning permission and the Council has started enforcement action.

The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Council’s Regulatory and Appeals Committee yesterday.

Councillor Roger L’Amie said something had to be done before autumn brought wetter weather, as this would make the tracks even more hazardous.

He said: “You put something slippery on the track and it’s like driving on black ice.”

The meeting heard that the firm had now entered into a dialogue with planning officers, but councillors said if this didn’t resolve the issue, enforcement action must be taken soon.

Councillor Shabir Hussain said: “We want action on this and the sooner the better.”

Earlier this week, Tom Hirst, of Dimensional Stone Sales, said the firm had moved its work indoors to head off the problem.
