Border Force officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of rolling tobacco and thousands of cigarettes through Leeds-Bradford International Airport.
The seizure was made on Saturday, August 24, when a British woman returned from China. Officers searched a woman when she arrived on a connecting flight from Amsterdam.
They found 28 silver foil packages containing 2.5kg of rolling tobacco each in her suitcase. Cigarettes were also found concealed.
The luggage contained no clothing or personal belongings.
The woman, who lives in Leeds, attempted to smuggle 70kg of rolling tobacco and 7,200 cigarettes in total.
If the haul had not been intercepted it could have cost the treasury £22,000 in unpaid excise duty. All the tobacco will be destroyed. Kevin Parsons, of the Border Force North, said: “This amount of tobacco would have been hard enough to smuggle by car, let alone in your suitcase.
“Thanks to the vigilance of our officers we have stopped a major smuggling attempt.”
