A grateful mum is hosting a charity event to mark ten years since her son almost died in a collision with a bus.

Darren Weston, then 13, was trapped underneath the vehicle for almost an hour following the incident on Manchester Road on September 9, 2003.

The impact shifted all of the organs in his body and he also broke his legs, ankle, jaw, an arm, nose, hip and a bone in his neck.

Now, his mum Mandy Wood wants to mark a decade since the collision by raising money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, who she says saved Darren’s life by whisking him to Leeds General Infirmary.

She is hosting a bumper fundraiser for the charity at The Northern pub, Halifax Road, Bradford, on September 15. “We want to make it as big as possible,” said Mrs Wood. “The air ambulance saved my son’s life – he wouldn’t be here without them.

“It would be really nice to see lots of people there. I can’t thank the air ambulance enough, and no amount of money can say thank-you for my son. But it can and will help save somebody else.”

Darren, who is now 23 and works for Ashtree Vision & Safety in Bradford, will speak at the event about how the air ambulance helped him and saved his life.

Mrs Wood, of Beacon Place, Buttershaw, added: “Darren has bad arthritis and short-term memory loss as a result of the crash. And he has got all his scars.

“But he keeps busy and he goes to the gym.”

Darren, who used to go to Buttershaw High School, had metal plates and wires in his legs, ankles and jaw after the collision and was nicknamed The Terminator by his family because he had so much metal in his body.

About a week after the accident, Darren’s uncle Russell Wood told the Telegraph & Argus that his nephew almost died after losing more blood than the doctors could pump in.

Mr Wood said Darren had received between 24 and 25 pints of blood.

The event at The Northern, which starts at noon, will feature live music, stalls, pony rides, face-painting, raffles, auctions and tombola, among other things.

Mrs Wood said she was still looking for prizes for the auction, raffle and tombola. If anyone can help, e-mail her at mandywood54@hotmail.co.uk or go into the pub.

She added: “Everybody is welcome – come along for a family day out and to raise money for a much-needed air ambulance.”

Also, two regulars from The Northern – Steven Taylor and Dean Cornwell – will be doing a sponsored bike ride from the pub to Blackpool in aid of the air ambulance.
