A Keighley town councillor is backing a couple’s campaign for speed-reduction measures on the road outside their house.

Coun Graham Mitchell has pledged to take up Joe and Rhona Woollard’s concerns with the police and council departments.

The Woollards claim that residents’ cars are regularly damaged by vehicles exceeding the 30mph limit on Oakworth Road, Bogthorn.

They say drivers speed up along the flat half-mile stretch opposite the former Bronte Middle School.

Mrs Woollards said: “Once they get to the top of the hill after the speed cameras they start speeding.

“Not long ago a car went through the garden opposite us, clipped a tree and knocked down a telegraph pole. Our cars have lost wing mirrors.” The Woollards raised the alarm after two cars collided outside their house earlier this month. The cause of the accident is unknown.

Mr Woollard’s own car was badly damaged last year after being hit by a vehicle which overturned while travelling along the stretch of Oakworth Road.

Coun Mitchell, who represents Oakworth on Keighley Town Council, said traffic-calming was unlikely to be approved for Oakworth Road.

He said he would bring the problem up with police, Bradford Council highways officers, and the town council’s own watch and transport committee.

He said: “Speed cameras on the incline between Fell Lane and Exley Head have helped enormously, and most cars are driving at the right speed all the way to Oakworth.

“But there are a minority who do go too fast. I absolutely accept what Mr Woollard says and I know that speed is an issue.

“It’s not the sort of road where you can put in speed humps. It’s the main road through to Colne and is used by an awful lot of people.”

Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team had not received reports of speeding on the Bogthorn stretch of Oakworth Road, but said residents could report issues to (01535) 617119.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “At the moment there are no proposals for speed reduction measures there but we will monitor the situation.”
