A gunman who fired shots at a car in a dark Bradford street had brought fear to a neighbourhood where many families lived, a community leader said last night.

Councillor Abdul Jabar (Lab, Great Horton) urged anyone who could help catch those responsible for the shooting in Spencer Road, Lidget Green, late on Friday, to go to the police.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for information that will lead to the arrest of the gunman.

Loud bangs were reported by residents on the street at 10.30pm and officers recovered a silver Toyota Yaris with damage consistent with a firearms discharge.

The scene of the shooting, outside a former shop near the junction with Hartington Terrace, was cordoned off.

The disused building is secured with metal grilles and large padlocks.

Coun Jabar, who lives in the immediate area and has been a local resident for more than 20 years, said: “There is no place here for actions like this. I have never known anything like this happen.

“I have visited families on Saturday and Sunday to provide reassurance.”

“This is a good community area and I am working hard with the police to catch these culprits.

“Many people are very shocked by what has happened. It has made them very afraid.”

On Saturday afternoon, children were playing in the sunlit street, yards from where the shooting took place.

Some residents, who did not want to give their names, said there was often trouble in the area, but declined to say what kind.

Detective Inspector Paul Campbell said: “The vehicle was stationary at the time it was attacked and did not contain any occupants.

“Although our investigations are currently at an early stage, we do believe this was a targeted and isolated attack.

“Any witnesses or anyone with information who could assist in our enquiries should contact the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
