A Bradford primary school hit by thousands of pounds worth of vandalism has been given cash by a nearby supermarket to transform its grounds.

St William’s Catholic Primary School in Girlington, which has had windows and skylights smashed during six incidents this year, was given £200 by Asda on Cemetery Road to create a new growing garden for pupils.

Head-teacher Claire Gardner said the ongoing attacks meant staff had not been able to buy ‘nice things’ for pupils for fear they would be targeted.

But thanks to the donation from Asda, they can now buy tools, soil, bulbs and seeds for a new gardening project.

The school’s own fundraising will buy a new fence to keep troublemakers out and a donation by charity Participate Projects will safeguard new playground equipment.

Miss Gardner said: “We’re on an industrial estate so it’s nice a business nearby is supporting us.

“The big problem for us is that we haven’t been able to put things in that the children enjoy, like gardens and play equipment, in case they get vandalised.

“Since last year there have been five or six incidents. We’ve had 19 skylights and nine windows smashed.

“It’s wonderful to see the community come together to help us provide all we can for our pupils.

“Asda will also be helping us erect the new fence in the coming weeks so we’re eternally grateful for the store’s ongoing support.”

Ingrid Fernandes, community champion at Asda, said: “Everyone at the store has been eager to support St William’s ever since we heard about the terrible vandalism. These children should be allowed to enjoy their schooling in a fun environment without the fear of it being trashed one week to the next.

“We hope our donation will help the teachers, who have been working tirelessly to restore its grounds and facilities, to give the children the opportunities they deserve.”

Police are investigating vandalism at the school Witnesses or anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
