The Royal Mail is appealing to dog owners in the city to spare a thought for their postie this week.
Since April 2011, more than 5,500 postmen and women have been attacked by pets resulting in more than 4,000 days lost due to injury.
And between April last year and this year, 15 posties were injured by dogs in the BD postcode district alone.
A range of activities will be taking place during this week’s Dog Awareness Week.
Steve Greaves, director of safety for Royal Mail North said: “For the first time, we are holding a Dog Awareness Week working with the Communication Workers Union, animal charities and organisations to raise awareness of the problems our postmen and women face daily when they are delivering the mail and are appealing to dog owners in the BD postcode area to work with us."
