Life-saving first aid courses are being run by St John Ambulance at its centres in Shipley and Otley later this year.
The Essential First Aid course lasts three hours and caters for all ages covering the main first aid emergencies of choking, severe bleeding and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Research carried out by St John Ambulance in 2010 showed that up to 140,000 people die every year in situations where first aid could have made the difference.
Their survey found 58 per cent of people wouldn’t know what to do if faced with a medical emergency and a quarter would do nothing.
Simon Dunn, Regional Director for St John Ambulance in the North East, said: “If you know basic first aid, anyone can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”
The course costs £30 and is open to youngsters aged between 12 and 16 when accompanied by an adult.
