Armed police raced to reports of gunshots in a street off Dick Lane to discover a stolen car on fire whose petrol tank had exploded.

The armed response vehicle arrived at Dareen Street where the Fiat Punto car was ablaze and had also set fire to another car parked in the residential area.

A firecrew from Bradford station also attended the incident at 1.15am on Friday morning said watch commander Alan Holdsworth.

“It appears the stolen Punto had been set on fire and was so close to the other vehicle that it also caught alight.

“Armed police were there because of reports of gunfire,” he said.

A West Yorkshire police confirmed that a patrolling car with weapons officers had been directed to the address after a resident reported hearing two loud gunshots.

“They found the stolen Punto in flames, which had subsequently set alight a white Kia Sportage CrDi 4x4.

“Because of that we are are now investigating this as car theft and arson,” he said.
