An award-winning children’s author is urging kids to enjoy scary stories this summer.

Chris Mould, author and illustrator of the Something Wickedly Weird and Spindlewood series, will help to kick off a summer reading challenge taking place in local libraries.

He will visit Shipley Library on Friday July 12 to tell children from four local schools about the national Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge, in which primary-age children are encouraged to read six or more books over the summer holiday.

Local libraries will be hosting spine-tingling activities to support the challenge, and participating children can collect stickers, bookmarks, fridge magnets, key rings and wristbands as they progress through the scheme.

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for culture, said: “The best thing about the Summer Reading Challenge is that children continue to read throughout the school holidays.

“This means that when they return to school in September their reading skills are just as good, if not better, than when they broke up for the summer holiday.”
